Persuasive Essay

"I guess the main thing i came up here to tell you is, I don't know how you go on, but i really hope you'll keep doing it. That you won't give up esperanza. I thought of that last night. Esperanza is all you get, no second chances. What you have to do is try and think of reasons to stick it out."(pg. 156) This quote from Barbara Kingsolver's The Bean Trees, represents hope, courage, and spontaneity. I believe that if this book were ever lost this quote should be saved because of what it represents.

The definition of hope is to desire with expectation of fulfillment. Taylor tells Esperanza to never give up hope, or esperanza, after Esperanza attempted suicide. Taylor tries to figure out why Esperanza would do that to Estevan, to everyone who cares for her. When Taylor learns what had happened to Estevan and Esperanza she begins to understand more about how one must have hope to continue life. When Taylor gives Esperanza that helpful advise, she is also telling herself to never give up hope. Hope, or esperanza, is something that every one needs in order to be able to live a mentally helathy life.

Courage is the mental or moral strength to venture, perseverve, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Taylor realizes that Esperanza is lacking some courage that she needs to help carry her through hard times. When Taylor helps Estevan and Esperanza move to Oklahoma, Taylor knows that they all need courage in order to make the move work. Courage is very important in The Bean Trees, each of the main characters goes throught a time when really all they need to make it through is courage.

The definition of spontaneity is acting upon sudden impulses. Taylor tells Esperanza,"Esperanza is all you get, no second chances. What you have to do is try and think of reasons to stick it out." (pg. 156) The idea of spontaneity occurs all through out the book, and this quote sums up the meaning of spontaneity. Out of impulse, Taylor offers to drive Estevan and Esperanza to Oklahoma, but that is just one instance when the main character experience acts of spontaneity. These acts have helped the characters all find each other and put them on the right path in life.

"I guess the main thing i came up here to tell you is, I don't know how you go on, but i really hope you'll keep doing it. That you won't give up esperanza. I thought of that last night. Esperanza is all you get, no second chances. What you have to do is try and think of reasons to stick it out."(pg. 156) This quote represents all parts and characters of The Bean Trees. The hope, the courage, and the spontabeity of Taylor, Esperanza, Estevan, Turtle, Maddie, and Lou Ann is displayed in this quote and that is why i believe that if this book were ever destroyed this quote should be saved.
