My Grandparents

As we drive to my grandparents’ house from the airport, I remember my energetic grandmother saying over and over how excited she was to see me. My grandfather, while driving, asks simply, “How’s school?” and things like that. Meanwhile, my grandmother is still happily chatting away about what we are going to do over the next few days. As we get closer, my grandfather starts to talk about the fancy restaurants we will be going to. Just before we get back to their house, we stop and get me a delicious slice of pepperoni pizza.

Pulling into their driveway, I see the familiar sight of their white house with the pillars in the front. When we walk in the front door the whiff of their house reaches my nose. I still don’t now what that smell is. I take my stuff down to the basement to find that the room is exactly the same. This is my home away from home.

As it draws closer to our dinner reservation, we all start to get ready. I am always the first one, so normally I sit down and turn on my grandparents’ ancient T.V. No matter what, we always get to our dinner reservation just in time because someone always forgets something on their way out of the house. Dinner with my grandparents is a lot of fun. We never run out of things to talk about, and I feel five pounds heavier after.

However, the next morning we would find a way to burn off the pounds. Sometimes we would walk to Starbucks or a bagel store. After that, we would get on a subway train and pop in at my cousins’ house. We would stay for lunch then get on another train to go back to their house. By this time it is late afternoon and we have to get ready for dinner. Tonight we are going to meet my aunt and uncle.

My uncle is in his early forties, but he acts like a 4 year old. We always share great jokes when we see each other. My aunt and I are into the same type of music. She is a little bit young than my uncle (Only on the outside!) at thirty-five. They got married last year in Central Park.

For some odd reason, the next morning is always overcast. When I wake up, I shower and brush my teeth. I do that first so I don’t forget my toiletries. Next, I put on the last of my clean clothes and pack the rest in my suitcase. Then I bring everything upstairs and have a quick breakfast with my grandparents. Finally we get all my stuff in the car and drive to the airport. We say our good-byes and I get on a plane to go back home… until next time.

I still go up to my grandparents’ house often. We still do everything exactly the same (more or less), too!
